The sport of cricket has the second-most viewers in the world. England, India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and the West Indies have all been playing the game of cricket since the 19th century.
Cricket has three main formats of play — the five-day test, the 50-over one-day game, and the shortened 20-over game. The 20-over game, also known as the T20 game, is exciting because the skill of the bowlers and batsman get tested over a short span.
2022 is the 15th season of the extremely popular Indian Premier League (IPL), a professional T20 competition contested by 10 teams from 10 Indian cities.
High Quality Of Cricket
The 10 IPL teams or franchises have invested vast amounts of money to get the best Indian and international players to compete for the IPL title. These combinations make for excellent cricket quality. The players all get bought at auction at the beginning of each year, which adds to the hype of the IPL. A team can put only four non-Indian players on the field of 11 players at one time, and this mix is why the IPL cricket quality is high. The top batsman and bowlers in world cricket are on display during every IPL match. There are big-money prizes for the best batsman and bowler at the end of the competition, which motivates players to do their best and adds to the high quality of cricket.
The quality and experience of the experienced players rub off on the youngsters. The constant pressure to perform also demands quick learning curves for the more inexperienced players. Both bowlers and batters must adjust their regular game to play this fast-moving cricket match. New ways to bowl and different playing shots are produced in every game.
Sport as Job Opportunity
Big money paid to top cricket players in the IPL has an incredible ripple effect on young cricketers throughout India. Playing in the IPL can give a young Indian cricketer an economically independent lifestyle. Professionalism is good for the game because more youngsters are now committed to playing cricket after school. That used to be a significant drawback to cricket when it wasn’t professional and good players had to work traditional jobs to support their families, leaving not enough time to play the game. Indian cricket is getting a massive boost from the IPL. You can see how the Indian team is performing so much better internationally since the induction of the IPL.
It is becoming a dream of many young Indian cricketers to play for one of the IPL teams. They hone their skills to be good enough to be selected, and all this improves the quality of the game. IPL job opportunities are only available to the best young cricketers.
All-Star Players in One Tournament
The IPL is a successful competition because some of the world’s best cricketers play in local stadiums in every IPL match. The matches are spectacular events, with lots of music and fireworks displays. Every six that IPL star players hit are welcomed with huge applause. All the big names in cricket from 2008 have played in the IPL, including Brian Lara, Shane Warne, and Sachin Tendulkar, to name a few. Then came Rohit Sharma, Chris Gayle, and AB de Villiers.
There is no better prospect than the world’s best bowlers getting ready to bowl at the world’s best batsmen, and IPL 2022 brings all-star players taking on each other in this shorter game. Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Josh Butler, and David Warner are the best batsmen on display at this year’s IPL, and Yusvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Avesh Khan are the top bowlers on show.
The T20 Format
The IPL format is the shorter 20-over format, also known as T20. Each bowler is allowed four overs to bowl. Most teams have four out-and-out bowlers and two or three all-rounders who bowl and bat. There are four frontline batters and a wicketkeeper. There are fielding restrictions of no more than two fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the first six overs. This period is also known as the powerplay. After the powerplay, you can field a maximum of five fielders outside that circle. There may not be more than five fielders on the leg side at any stage of the innings.
One team will bat for 20 overs and get as high a score as possible. After the 20 overs, the other team will bat for 20 overs and try to get more runs. If the score is tied after the 20 overs, both teams will bat for one over and try to get as many runs as possible. This is called the super over. If a team loses two wickets in the over, they lose the game. The team with the most runs wins the game.
Fanbases
The IPL fanbase is enormous, as people love to come to the matches dressed in their team’s colours. The fanbases are not restricted to India as the IPL is watched by millions worldwide. The Mumbai Indians have an enormous fanbase, with 8.2 million Instagram fans and 7.1 million Twitter fans. Royal Challengers Bangalore is second with 7.7 million Instagram fans and 5.2 million Twitter fans, followed by Delhi Capitals with 2.9 million Instagrammers and 2.1 million Twitter followers.
In India, ticket sales for matches and the sale of licensed merchandise and beverages can make up to 20% of a franchise’s earnings.
IPL is so loved because is brings so many cricket greats from all over to bowl us over. This fast-paced, high intensity game is unique in bringing supporters together to celebrate this beloved game.
