Dindigul Dragons and Ruby Trichy Warriors close contenders
After 28 league matches finishing with the clash between the top two sides, the Tamil Nadu Premier League’s 2021 edition is heading towards the play-off stages. Four teams at the top of the points table head into the next stage that starts on August 10th with the Qualifier.
- Ruby Trichy Warriors topped the league stage points table after a win over two-time champions Chepauk Super Gillies in the last game of the first stage.
- Dindigul Dragons and Lyca Kovai Kings are the other two teams that made it to the play-offs.
Summary of performances of teams in the play-off
The two-time title winners started the season slowly after a no-result in the first game followed by a loss in the next, but quickly gained wins to go up the points table. They beat two of the three teams that made it to the play-offs, losing to Trichy Warriors in the last game to move to second position.
Like CSG, RTW started the season slowly, winning two and losing two of their first four games, but surged ahead in the next few, including a confidence-boosting win against Chepauk in the last game, to top the points table.
Dindigul Dragons finished the league stage with four wins and three losses and finished third in the points table. They were the only side to not be involved in any rain-affected matches and hence had results in each of their seven games.
LKK finished fourth in the table and just about scraped through to the play-offs on net run rate, edging out Nellai Royal Kings. The penultimate game of the league stage proved to be a crucial one as LKK beat NRK by seven runs to go level on points with a better run rate.
Qualifier 1: RTW vs CSG
Ruby Trichy Warriors are the in-form side and are best placed to win the first qualifier despite the history that Chepauk Super Gillies have in the league. Back Ruby Trichy Warriors at 2.20!
Eliminator: LKK vs DGD
Dindigul Dragons were the more assured of the two teams in the league stage and have recent form going their way. They are expected to head to the second qualifiers to face the losers from the first.
Ruby Trichy Warriors haven’t been overly reliant on one or two players like the rest of the teams in the play-offs and have good odds of going through and winning the title for the very first time.
