Finalists in last two seasons, Stars are favourites against Heat
The Melbourne Stars are one of the most successful sides in the Big Bash League if you do not really consider the results in the finals. They have made it to the semi-finals in all but one season and are runners up in the last two editions of the league. That said, they have never won the title. With good additions to the squad, the Stars are favourites with odds of 1.60 to win against Brisbane Heat in their first match of the season.
The Brisbane Heat are title winners in the second edition of the Big Bash League, but haven’t made it to the semi-finals in the last three seasons in the league. In fact, they have only made it to the semi-finals twice ever and are one of the most underwhelming sides in the league. However, they have a strong squad this time around. Nevertheless, against a strong Stars team that are determined to get a title win under their belt, their odds of winning are placed at 2.10.

Overall head to head record favours Brisbane Heat
Interestingly, despite the difference in the records of the teams in the league, the overall records favour the Brisbane Heat over Melbourne Stars. The Heat have the registered eight wins as against four losses against Stars over the years. In the last two seasons, the spoils have been shared 1-1 in the league games between these two teams.
RECOMMENDED BET: The Stars have a better squad and greater depth and have odds of 1.60 to beat Brisbane Heat.
While the Stars have success in the league, the Heat seem to have the wood over them as reflected from overall records. The difference in the squad strengths suggest that we are in for a Stars win this time around. But given that the Brisbane franchise knows a thing or two about beating Stars, it makes for a tricky bet.
Keep an eye on…
The Stars batting: Big names headline the Stars batting line-up this season. Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Ben Dunk and Nic Maddison are joined by West Indian hitters Nicholas Pooran and Andre Fletcher. The main attraction in the Stars line-up is their strong batting line-up. With Heat not boasting of a great bowling attack, the Stars batsmen will likely have a gala time.
TIP: The Stars have two formidable openers and have odds of 1.74 to make the higher opening partnership.
Morne Morkel: The South African player made a return to the Big Bash League as a local player from the Scorchers and will be a handful on the bouncy decks in Australia. Morkel will add some much-needed striking prowess with the ball to the Heat bowling line-up. His season could well determine their fortunes this time around.
