Two intense days of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 auction finally ended on Sunday (Feb. 13). Out of 590 players, who went under the hammer, 204 were sold, including 67 overseas players. A gobsmacking ₹551 crore was spent in total with 10 teams combined. The opening day of the IPL 2022 auction saw 74 players bought and that was followed by an accelerated process on Day 2, during which 130 players were taken.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
CSK mostly approached the same template that won them their fourth IPL title last year. While they had retained four players prior to the auction, the Men in Yellow bought back eight of the 11 players who featured in the IPL 2021 final. However, they failed to re-sign two crucial players – Faf du Plessis and Shardul Thakur. CSK will certainly miss Thakur’s ability to strike in the middle overs, which was significant to their success in UAE last year.
To cover up for du Plessis’ loss, CSK signed New Zealander Devon Convoy and will hope to see him partner Ruturaj Gaikwad and anchor their innings at the top.
CSK’s Possible Playing XI ahead of IPL 2022: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Moeen Ali, Robin Uthappa/Shivam Dube, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c&wk), Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo, KM Asif/Tushar Deshpande/Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Adam Milne.
Delhi Capitals (DC)
DC pulled off a masterstroke on Day 1 of the IPL 2022 Auction: they signed T20 World Cup winners David Warner and Mitchell Marsh at steal prices – 6.25 crore and 6.50 crore respectively. DC also acquired Shardul Thakur at INR 10.75 crore, which was also a steal, considering his excellent record in the tournament over the years. While DC missed on their previous two stars Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer, they replaced them with Warner and Marsh. Now, DC have one of the most dynamic top 4s in the tournament in Prithvi Shaw, Warner, Marsh and Rishabh Pant.
DC’s Possible Starting XI ahead of IPL 2022: Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, Rovman Powell, Sarfaraz Khan/Mandeep Singh, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Chetan Sakariya.
Gujarat Titans (GT)
One of the two newly added teams to the IPL, Gujarat Titans, have built one of the best bowling attacks in the tournament ahead of the 15th season. In Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan, Lockie Ferguson, Alzarri Joseph, Darshan Nalkande, Varun Aaron and Jayant Yadav, bowling is certainly their core. Their batting department doesn’t look as strong as one would expect the majority of runs to come from the bats of Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill and Jason Roy.
GT’s Possible Starting XI ahead of IPL 2022: Jason Roy, Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Abhinav Manohar, Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya (c), Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Alzarri Joseph.
Punjab Kings (PBKS)
With just two playoffs appearances in the last 14 seasons, PBKS really needed to reset ahead of the upcoming season. While losing Shikhar Dhawan was DC’s loss, it turned out to be PBKS’s gain. He will open with Mayank Agarwal and PBKS would expect these two to deliver as they are quite experienced and good players of spin. One of the highlights of the auction was also PBKS securing England hitter Liam Livingstone. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was another excellent buy by PBKS.
PBKS’s Possible Starting XI ahead of IPL 2022: Mayank Agarwal, Shikhar Dhawan, Raj Bawa, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh, Sandeep Sharma/Ishan Porel/Harpreet Brar.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
RR seem to have a balanced side. Among their best purchases were Shimron Hetmyer and Devdutt Padikkal. While Hetmyer comes with his explosive batting prowess, Padikkal brings stability at the top, having impressed in his two seasons with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Their bowling department has incredible experience in IPL: Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin. They also bought pacers Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult.
RR’s Possible Starting XI ahead of IPL 2022: Jos Buttler, Yashaswi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Sanju Samson (c), Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, James Neesham, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)
RCB have once again repeated the same mistake of filling the side with enough bowling options, while their batting department still has some holes. Along with already retained Mohammed Siraj, RCB brought back Harshal Patel and signed Chris Jordan, Jason Behrendorff and Sherfane Rutherford to comprise an excellent bowling attack. But the side definitely lacks dependable options in the middle order. One of the best purchases of RCB is CSK’s Du Plessis, who could be a candidate to take up the side’s captaincy as well.
Once again RCB will enter an IPL season heavily dependent on three batters, in this case, Kohli, du Plessis and Maxwell.
RCB’s Possible Starting XI ahead of IPL 2022: Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Anuj Rawat / Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Shahbaz Ahmed, Mohammed Siraj, Josh Hazlewood.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
They needed a captain, they got one in Shreyas Iyer, who has also come in as a dependable option in the batting department. But their top-order will certainly miss the services of Rahul Tripathi, who they could not buy back. Instead, they showed immense faith in Ajinkya Rahane, who has hardly played in the IPL in the last two seasons. Kolkata also bought Sam Billings as the Englishman was filling two slots – wicketkeeper and middle-order batter. KKR still do not have the bowlers who would strike in the powerplay and they lack a proper finisher.
KKR’s Possible Starting XI: Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Rana, Sam Billings, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine, Shivam Mavi, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)
Despite being a new team, LSG managed to build their team around a fine Indian core, while they also made some great overseas purchases at the IPL 2022 auction. LSG have the right combination of batsmen who are skillful against pacers and spin. Moreover, their pace attack has plenty of options who can deliver at multiple phases of an innings.
The addition of Quinton de Kock was a great one as LSG would expect the Proteas batter to open with skipper KL Rahul and anchor the side’s innings at the top. In Jason Holder, Marcus Stoinis and Deepak Hooda, LSG have great all-around options.
LSG’s Possible Starting XI ahead of IPL 2022: KL Rahul (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Manish Pandey, Manan Vohra, Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya, Jason Holder, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Mark Wood.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
SRH made excellent purchases at the auction as they bought Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram and Glenn Phillips to fill in their top order. SRH will certainly miss the services of their former skipper David Warner and his opening partner Jonny Bairstow. They will also be without their key spinner Rashid Khan, who was a key figure in their title-winning season in 2016.
Meanwhile, SRH also bought three quality bowling all-rounders in Romario Shepherd, Sean Abbott, and Marco Jansen – trying to address the late overs collapses which recurred often in the last cycle.
SRH’s Possible Starting XI ahead of IPL 2022: Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram/Glenn Phillips, Kane Williamson, Nicholas Pooran, Abhishek Sharma, Abdul Samad, Romario Shepherd, Washington Sundar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Kartik Tyagi/Umran Malik.
Mumbai Indians (MI)
When they did not retain Ishan Kishan and the Pandya brothers, it was never going to be easy for MI to rebuild the template that won them the title in 2019 and 2020. While they failed to bring back Krunal Pandya, MI set the auction on fire when they won the bidding war for Kishan at INR 15.25 crore. Kishan became the second most expensive Indian signing at the IPL auction and he was the costliest purchase at the IPL 2022 auction.
The strength of the team is batting – the top three including Rohit Sharma, Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav and the finishers in Kieron Pollard, Tim David, Daniel Sams, and Fabian Allen. While the pair of Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah will come into action only in 2023, this season Bumrah will have the support of Tymal Mills and Riley Meredith in the pace attack.
Mumbai have one of the weakest spin department at present and if the pacers don’t deail the opposition with the new ball, they could be in trouble through the middle overs.
MI’s Possible Starting XI ahead of IPL 2022: Rohit Sharma(c), Tilak Varma/Anmolpreet Singh, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan (wk), Tim David, Kieron Pollard, Daniel Sams, Sanjay Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Tymal Mills, Murugan Ashwin.
