The eighth season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is set to begin on 18th August and proceeds till the 10th of September. With the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the world, there’s a slight change in the venues with all the matches scheduled to take place in Trinidad. There will be 33 matches played across two venues in the tournament in the 2020 season. The CPL 2020 will take place in a bio-secure environment with strict protocols to adhere to measures taken globally to not spread the virus.
CPL teams and previous champions
The action-packed Caribbean Premier League was first launched in 2013 although a private T20 competition began in the Caribbean Islands with the Stanford 20/20 way back in 2006.
The CPL has six teams and the structure of the tournament is such that there is a group stage and a knockout stage. The play-off stage of the CPL has two semi-finals and a final.
The six teams in the competition are Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, St Lucia Zouks and Trinbago Knight Riders.
Jamaica Tallawahs won the inaugural tournament in 2013. Trinbago Knight Riders have won the tournament thrice (2015, 2017 and 2018).
The latest edition of the CPL was won by Barbados Tridents after they beat Guyana Amazon Warriors by 27 runs in the final.
Who will take this year’s trophy home and will Guyana Amazon Warriors come close to winning it again? Read below our predictions.
The team to watch out for:
Guyana Amazon Warriors
A team built around a threatening spin bowling attack, the Guyana Amazon Warriors won all matches until the final in 2019, only to lose the title to Barbados Tridents. Coached by former South African spinner Johan Botha, the Guyana Amazon Warriors are a genuine threat this year as well. The franchise has made it to the finals of the CPL on five occasions (2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019) only to lose every single time.
RECOMMENDED BET: Back Guyana Amazon Warriors to win the title at 3.75

Key players
Andre Russell (Jamaica Tallawahs)
One of the most sought after T20 players in the world, Andre Russell is a belligerent batting all-rounder for Jamaica Tallawahs with a formidable record in the Caribbean Premier League. In 57 CPL matches, Russell has 1109 runs at a strike rate of 181.2 with two centuries. He also has 55 wickets with the ball with a best of 4/23 and a bowling average of 24.32.
Kieron Pollard (Trinbago Knight Riders)

Pollard’s leadership, as much as his batting, will be in focus this year.

The underrated team in the competition
St Lucia Zouks
Coached by former Zimbabwean player and England coach Andy Flower and skippered by former West Indies captain, Daren Sammy, St Lucia Zouks have a formidable outfit on paper. In Andre Fletcher, Obed McCoy and Rahkeem Cornwall, they have three influential local players alongside Sammy. They retained Colin Ingram, a reliable overseas middle-order batsman, and signed up Mohammad Nabi, a beast of an all-rounder in the format, and two promising young West Indies players in Chemar Holder and Leniko Boucher. In South Africans, Rilee Rossouw and Anrich Nortje, they have two other interesting signings but their availability is still uncertain now.
